The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin (Department II; Director: Prof. Lorraine Daston) seeks an outstanding junior scholar for a two-year position (beginning no later than 1 July 2008) as Research Scholar in conjunction with the research project, coordinated by Dr. Fernando Vidal, "The Cerebral Subject: Brain and Self in Contemporary Culture" (please see details).
Candidates should hold a doctorate in the history of science or related field (e.g., anthropology or sociology of science, cultural studies, medical anthropology, neuro- or cognitive sciences) at the time the position begins, and show evidence of scholarly promise in the form of publications or other achievements. The language of the bimonthly Departmental colloquium is English; it is expected that candidates will be able to present their own work and discuss that of others fluently in that language. Applications may, however, be submitted in German, English, or French.
The position is primarily devoted to research, with no teaching duties and minimal administrative responsibilities (maximum 25% of the Scholar's time). The position is ranked at the E13 (formerly BAT IIA) level in the German system, which roughly corresponds to that of Lecturer in Britain, Assistant Professor in North America, and Maître de conférences in France.
