Research mobility scheme: CEU-HESP Comparative History Project

CAS 20/06/2008

The Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Institute has generously granted funds for deepening the institutional collaboration, using the History Department of CEU as a hub of institutional and research mobility.

The CHP is now calling for applications to organize transnational workshops and individual mobility related to faculty and PhD students for the period of 1 October to 15 December 2008.

The CHP activities this year will be related to the theme “Teaching Comparative History in East, Central and Southeastern Europe”. Proposals are expected to address the theoretical implications of comparative research for re-thinking Central and Eastern European history or formulate actual teaching agenda in the field. The most qualified candidates are envisaged to participate in the general annual CHP conference in the forthcoming academic year.

Transnational workshops

Each academic year CHP can fund a limited number of small workshops aimed at developing inter-regional cooperation. The purpose of these workshops is to allow eligible higher education institutions to launch international scholarly collaboration in a chosen field and to invite scholars from regional universities to take part in these events. There is no strict thematic limitation but the workshops are meant to lead to the development of a regional/trans-national research network and also the devising of a curriculum of trans-national history. The funding allocation is the following for the forthcoming period:

- total of 20 participants (1-2 smaller workshops); maximum 250 USD per person travel grant, maximum 6 visa expenses per workshop (altogether 15 per year for the whole project); max. 50 USD accommodation per person per night; maximum 500 USD for catering (altogether we have 1,250 USD for the two-three workshops) (in case it is justified, travel, catering and accommodation budgets can be merged and part of the expenses relocated); 15 USD per participant per diem, 200 USD xeroxing expenses

Mobility

A,
PhD student exchange - This will allow PhD students (and, in exceptional cases, advanced MAs) to spend maximum three weeks in a chosen regional university – including Central European University - where they would like to pursue research or consult with relevant faculty members.

B, Faculty Exchange - This will allow interested younger faculty members to spend a maximum of two weeks in a chosen regional university – including Central European University - where they would like to pursue research or consult with relevant faculty members.

The funding allocation is the following:

Student exchange - maximum 5 places for coming to CEU, maximum 5 places for inter-regional research trips, for minimum 10 to maximum 20 days, travel covered, maximum 50 USD per day accommodation covered; visa expenses covered; 15 USD per diem; 350 USD research expenses (book, xerox, library entrance, interlibrary loan, with receipts)

Faculty exchange - 5 participants for maximum 15 days, 15 USD per diem, plus travel, visa, and accommodation covered, 400 USD research expenses (book, xerox, library entrance, interlibrary loan, with receipts)

The final deadline for transnational workshops intended to take place in October-December 2008 is 30 September 2008. The application package must include a written proposal indicating the topic and relevance of the workshop for the applicant institution in cc. 700 words, a preliminary program and list of participants, a budget proposal, a written statement of the hosting institution, contact information and the CV of the applicant(s).
