‘European Historical Dictatorship and Transformation Research’

financed by Vienna University is advertising internationally up to 12 doctoral stipends (c. €1,199.10/month gross). Beginning 1 October 2009; duration 36 months.

The college members should work on doctoral theses at Vienna University in the subjects of Contemporary History, East-European History, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, and Political Science. Particular attention will be paid to regional case studies (Baltic States, Greece, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Austria). Long-term presence in Vienna is expected, as is the readiness to take part in the accompanying programme of studies of the IK (more details on the Initiative College see: www.univie.ac.at/zeitgeschichte).

A prerequisite for entry to the IK is the completion of a Diploma, Magister or MA course of study in one of the subject areas involved, or the completion of another relevant course of study of the same status at a domestic or international university. The college members should normally take up their stipend before their 30th birthdays. Alongside good knowledge of English and German, additional knowledge of at least one further European language corresponding to the regional focal points is desired. In cases of limited knowledge of German, support will be offered within the framework of further education at the university.

Vienna University intends to increase the proportion of female employees, especially in senior positions and among academic staff. Qualified women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. In cases where applicants are equally well qualified, female candidates will be preferred.
Clearly written applications in German or English should be sent by email with the usual documents (CV without photo, certificates, five-page German or English exposé of the doctoral thesis project, reference of a university teacher and email as well as skype address) in PDF-format by 14 August 2009 to the Speaker of the IK. The skype interviews will take place on 27 and 28 August.
