60 Years Diplomatic Relations between Bulgaria and Greece, 1954-2014

CAS 22/07/2013

International Conference:

Sofia, May 16, 2014

In 2014 Greece and Bulgaria will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 1954 restoration of their diplomatic relations. Bilateral affairs of the last six decades underwent remarkable and unexpected progress - the two countries overcame burdensome legacies of the past, settled important wartime issues and established constructive political, economic and cultural relations for the first time in their diplomatic history. In the post-1989 period Greece and Bulgaria coped smoothly with the turbulent developments taking place on international, regional and domestic levels: in 1992 they signed a treaty of shared friendship and security, and in 2010 further strengthened their strategic partnership by the establishment of a Summit Cooperation Council to regularly address key issues of bilateral collaboration. The dynamics of the Greek-Bulgarian reconciliation process in the last sixty years represents an interesting precedent in Balkan and European diplomacy. Paradoxically, it is namely this period that is lacking a detailed examination in international bibliography, apart from a few works of some Greek and Bulgarian scholars.

Motivated by the desire to gather academics and professionals whose field of expertise falls within the recent history of Greek-Bulgarian affairs, the Faculty of History of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” is hosting an international conference to mark the 60th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Greece. The conference will take place in Sofia on May 16, 2014, and its proceedings will be published in an edited volume.

We are pleased to invite you to share knowledge and exchange ideas on any topics related to the political, economic and cultural relations between Bulgaria and Greece. We kindly ask you to send abstract of no more than 300 words to until 15 September, 2013.
